1. Mobile App developed under Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana for quick reporting of Fish Diseases and timely scientific advice to aqua-farmers

What’s in the news?
- The Government of India has implemented the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with an investment of Rs. 20,050 crores to boost the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
- The National Surveillance Programme for Aquatic Animal Diseases (NSPAAD) was initiated in 2013 to address the disease constraint in aquaculture, with 24 collaborating centers and coordination by ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources.
- The 2nd phase of NSPAAD, supported under PMMSY, with a total cost of ₹33.778 crores for 3 years, aims to strengthen the aquatic animal disease surveillance program across India.
- NSPAAD has developed a network of aquatic animal health laboratories, diagnostic capabilities for detecting listed and emerging pathogens, and strengthened passive disease surveillance.
- The program provides scientific advice to farmers for disease management and has detected new pathogens, confirmed exotic and emerging diseases, and established transparent reporting systems.
- The program successfully dispelled speculations regarding the occurrence of Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) and increased the country’s credibility in reporting aquatic animal diseases internationally.
- To enhance farmer-based reporting, a “Report Fish Disease” App has been developed and launched, allowing farmers to report disease cases and receive scientific advice from field-level officers and fish health experts.
- The development of the app aligns with the vision of Digital India Programme to create a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy.
- The app aims to connect fish farmers, field-level officers, and fish health experts, enabling timely reporting, investigation, and scientific advice to address disease problems.
- The app’s implementation is expected to reduce economic losses caused by disease outbreaks, thereby increasing fish farmers’ income.
