Subedar Major
One of the prestigious ranks in the Indian Army is that of Subedar Major. This rank is the highest in the category of Junior Commissioned Officers. The position of a great responsibility as a whole of the category falls under them. They are considered as the Chief Advisor of the commanding officer. The people falling under this rank are highly experienced and are regarded as SM Saab. SM’s are often awarded with the honorary ranks such as Honorary Lieutenant or Honorary Captain.
How to become Subedar Major
There is a 3 stage recruitment process for the entry of Junior Commissioned Officer. There is no direct way to enter the rank of Subedar major. One has to start from low rank and get promotions to reach the rank of Subedar Major.

Eligibility Criteria for Subedar Major
The eligibility requirements are as of following:
1. Age Limit (as of October 2023)
Interested Candidates who want to join the Indian Army must fall in the age bracket below to be eligible for exams and other processes.
- Junior Commissioned Officer Catering (Army Service Corps)
Minimum age: Not Below 21 years
Maximum age: Not Above 27 years
- Junior Commissioned Officer Religious Teacher (All Arms)
Minimum age: Not Below 25 years
Maximum age: Not Above 36 years
2. Minimum Educational Qualification:

RT Granthi | Sikh Candidate with Graduation in any discipline from a UGC recognized University. In addition, individuals should have ‘Gyani’ in Punjabi. |
RT Maulvi | Muslim Candidate with Graduation in any discipline from a UGC recognized University. In addition, individuals should have Alim in Arabic or Adeeb-e-Mahir/ Urdu Mahir in Urdu. |
RT Padre | Christian Candidate with Graduation in any discipline from a UGC recognized University. In addition, an individual should have been ordained priesthood by the appropriate ecclesiastical authority. |
RT Budhist | Buddhist Candidate with Graduation in any discipline from a UGC recognized University. In addition, individuals should have been ordained as Monk/Buddhist Priest by an appropriate authority. |
3. Physical Fitness Requirements:
For the recruitment in the Indian Army, there are certain physical requirements which need to be fulfilled before he/she becomes eligible for joining the armed forces. The details of the fitness criteria is tabulated below:

- For Gorkhas & Ladakhi region candidates- 157
- Andaman & Nicobar Island, Lakshadweep Gp incl Mini coys – 155 (only Locals)

- For Gorkhas & Ladakhi region candidates – 48
Physical Fitness Test
Candidates should be able to run 1600m in 08 Minutes. Note: Provisions for extra time for 1.6 km run in Hilly Terrain Areas:-
- Between 5000 ft. to 9000 ft. – Additional 30 secs
- Between 9000 ft. to 12000 ft. – Additional 120 secs.
SKILLS REQUIRED FOR MAJOR SUBEDAR:
- Leadership skills: A major subedar must have strong leadership skills to command and motivate troops effectively.
- Communication skills: A major subedar must possess good communication skills which are essential to maintain the discipline within the unit.
- Decision Making: The ability to make decisions is essential in this field as the situations that one may face here can be volatile by nature.
- Organizational Skills: A Subedar Major must be able to manage and organize the activities of the unit efficiently.
- Problem Solving: The skill of problem solving is a gem for this field. Many times the Army faces situations that are totally unprecedented and not known, during that time tackling the problem is much needed.
- Interpersonal Skills: Building and maintaining positive and good relations with the other officers and colleagues is very important for effective teamwork.
- Adaptability: The ability to adapt to the changing situations and environment is an essential skill for a Major Subedar.
- Physical Fitness: A good physical fitness is must for any rank of the Indian Army. A healthy body is active, alert and strong. So is the maintenance for the fitness. Major Subedar needs to maintain their highest level of fitness for all seasons and conditions.
- Mental Resilience: The job of Major Subedar can be mentally taxing and is very important to not let stress and other factors affect you. So in this job resilience and ability to cope with stress is a must want.
